POF Experiment: The Conclusion

Posted by Rachel Scott on Monday, July 11, 2011, In : The POF Experiment
Last year, I began an experiment to explore the world of online dating via a free website called Plenty of Fish. My plan was to go on 10 dates--with 10 different men--to determine whether the douche bags I meet organically are more or less douchy than those online. After ten dates, I've come to the conclusion that douchebags are omnipresent. However, the douchbags I meet organically are much more attractive than the douchebags I've met through POF.

As a matter of fact, I recently rejected the...

POF #10

Posted by Rachel Scott on Monday, June 13, 2011, In : The POF Experiment
I finally did it! I completed The POF Experiment! I went on ten dates with ten different losers that I met on a lame dating website, "Plenty of Fish". It only took me a year...

I met CT at The Empire State Building on a rainy Saturday afternoon. He had tickets for the Skyride at the Empire State Building, which was pretty fun. We were guided into a roller coaster-like ride that simulated an exciting guided tour of New York City. Since bad weather and zero visibility prevented us from enjoying ...

POF #9: Baby Got Back

Posted by Rachel S. on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, In : The POF Experiment

After a week or so of Blackberry instant messaging, I met POF #9 at a local pub on the Upper East Side to watch Monday Night Football. We drank a beer as we chatted about the game, roommates, work, prior POF dates and other light subjects that are normally discussed between two people that have just met. He was friendly, funny, and HUGE-- 6'4" and at least 250lbs. He wasn't fat- just BIG! He was kind of cute actually. He was clean-cut, had short blond hair, blue eyes, nice smile, good teeth a...

POF #8 1/2: Desperado

Posted by Rachel S. on Friday, December 17, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
Although I never actually met Desperado, he consumed enough of my time and energy to merit a blog. I can't really consider him a date since we never met, so I'm only giving him a 1/2 number.

It began innocent enough, a few short messages via the POF website. We exchanged e-mails and arranged to meet at his alma mater, Columbia University. He offered to give me a campus tour, which seemed like fun since I'd never been. Although I had to cancel our initial date, we rescheduled for the following ...

POF #8: The German

Posted by Rachel S. on Monday, October 25, 2010, In : The POF Experiment

Last night, I couldn't sleep and was awake until after 4am. Nonetheless, I woke up this morning around 9am, slammed a double espresso, cranked out a grad school application, sold some furniture, went to a dance class, helped with a film casting, and squeezed in a late dinner with POF #8. Although I had planned on going home to freshen up before my date, I was already three hours behind schedule and too exhausted to make a fuss. Plus, we both happened to be in the same part of town. Despite th...

POF #7: TBD

Posted by Rachel S on Thursday, October 21, 2010, In : The POF Experiment

I've come to the point that I don't care about what I look like when I go on a blind date because chances are, my date will be a 3 (on a scale of 1-10). So on my most recent date, I did not brush my teeth, and wore comfy flat boots that did not match my dress at all.

In addition to minimal effort in appearance, I am also beginning to realize that I can say anything I want about myself, as long as I mention that I am a dancer. The dance factor seems to negate everything else, including smelly ...

POF #6: Banana Hammock

Posted by Rachel S on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
After two months, I finally went on another POF date. Internet dating is exhausting! After this experiment, I'm going to need therapy because I seem to get rejected by more internet geeks than guys I meet in-person. The latest rejection was from a guy I was supposed to meet at a jazz club last week, who told me that he couldn't make it because his dog was sick. Puhleez!

Anyway, I had been communicating with POF #6 for a couple of weeks. After a few failed attempts to meet, I was beginning to ...

POF #5: Snaggletooth

Posted by Rachel S. on Sunday, August 29, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
I woke up at the crack of my butt to jump out of a perfectly fine airplane. POF date #5 invited me to skydive with him and some of his motocross buddies. I asked if I could invite a few of my friends since it seemed like a group activity. Unfortunately, he told me there was no room for them. So, I went on this adventure solo. Since I had been skydiving before, I knew it would be fun. However, it would have been even more fun if I had gone with a group of my friends. Unfortunately, I wasn't ev...

POF #4: Titty F**ker

Posted by Rachel S. on Monday, August 23, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
I literally almost fell asleep on this date. Maybe it was the rain. Maybe it was because I have a cold. Or maybe POF #4 is just boring. Regardless, there was no chemistry. Although #4 is generally attractive, has a brand new pimped-out Jeep, and seems like a decent guy, I just wasn't feeling it.

Initially, I was excited to see that this guy didn't need a stylist. He's a good dresser, has good hair, is clean shaven, and looks like he works out. Moreover, he didn't have any noticable deformitie...

Bait & Switch

Posted by Rachel S. on Friday, August 20, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
Aside from the British guy who lead me on for two weeks before telling me he was dating someone, there are many other reasons why I have not been going on POF dates. One "almost" date didn't happen when a doctor who invited me to a Yankees game told me he wasn't able to get tickets. Instead, he suggested we meet up for drinks. Sorry Charlie! You cannot take away a Yankees game and replace it with drinks. That's like inviting me to Nobu, and going to McDonald's instead. It's the old bait and s...

The POF Reject

Posted by Rachel S. on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
I'm getting bored with POF. So far, I have been right about this on-line dating thing: It's awkward, embarrassing, and disappointing. Although I have a plethora of guys who contact me daily, I'm only remotely interested in maybe 1/10 of them. The few that make the cut get a reply. We usually message each other for a week. Then, nothing happens. It's annoying and pointless and a waste of my time.

The last guy I was looking forward to meet had been IM-ing me frequently, but always had something...

POF Experiment #3: The Accidental Pervert

Posted by Rachel S. on Saturday, August 7, 2010, In : The POF Experiment
It's been a while since I've been on a POF date. But I did promise to go on 10 dates. And I've only been on two. So, I agreed to go out with date #3 on short notice, despite the red flags: divorced, has children, older (43), and unclear photo. However, he's successful (has MBA, good job at Goldman Sachs, vacation/ski home), athletic (runs marathons), and invited me to his friend's one-man comedy show. The show is what sold me; comedy shows are always a lot of fun!

He told me that he would be ...

The POF Experiment #2: DWI Guy

Posted by Rachel on Thursday, July 29, 2010, In : The POF Experiment

Subject #1 (Nerd) of my POF experiment failed. But, I'm no quitter! Subject #2 is a 28-year-old engineer from Detroit. We met at a quaint little bar in SoHo. His wardrobe was much better than Nerd's. He wore nice jeans and a short-sleeved, button-down black shirt with interesting detail. He was clean cut, with a full head of very short hair. Overall, he was a fairly attractive man. Conversation was okay, better than my first date. But, It wasn't long before he started to annoy me.

First, Date...

The POF Experiment #1: Nerd

Posted by Rachel on Sunday, July 25, 2010, In : The POF Experiment

I finally did it! After many e-mails and IMs, I met up with one of the several contacts I made on Plenty of Fish (POF). He didn't look super hot on his profile, but attractive enough and seemed like a nice guy. He had a nice smile in his pics and seemed intelligent. He's an attorney who moved to NYC for law school about five years ago, and now has his own firm on Wall Street. He's one of five brothers- who are all doctors, lawyers, or psychologists. And he's Jewish! My mom would LOVE him! I, ...

The POF Experiment

Posted by Rachel Scott on Thursday, July 22, 2010, In : The POF Experiment

My good friend, Serial Dater, goes on dates nearly every night. It's very impressive! "How do you have so many dates all the time?" I asked. Her shocking confession: Plenty of Fish (POF)-- a dating website. I had always thought that on-line dating was so desperate and corny. But then I found out that my brother met his wife on a dating website--though that didn't surprise me because my brother is a dork. Also, my very cute nurse friend met a very cute firefighter on a website. That was two ye...

About Me

Rachel Scott Originally from Chicago, I migrated to Boulder,CO in 1997. I've been in Colorado ever since- leaving only when contracted for work by Club Med Resorts. I had contracts in Mexico, Saint Lucia, Turks and Caicos, and Florida. But after a long-time of being over-worked and under-appreciated as a choreographer, I quit and moved to Miami. After nearly a year of living in America's butthole, I went on an emergency vacation to Aspen, CO for X-games in 2006, and never left... until now. Goodbye quaint little mountain town; Hello concrete jungle!
