Aspen Doc
I love/hate Aspen! This week, I've changed my mind multiple times as to whether I'm moving back or not. Just when everything seemed to be falling into place, something else happened that made me want to book the next flight back to NYC. It's amazing how just one night can change everything...
Today, I worked from 8am until 10:30pm. Although exhausted, I met up with a friend. We drank a beer at a local pub before heading to a dance club. On our short walk from the bar to the club, I spotted Lake Powell Guy walking arm-in-arm with the married woman that he hooked up with while we were dating. "They're still together? How lovely," I thought as I rolled my eyes. My mood slightly declined. I then spotted High-5 and then another old flame. Because neither were important or recent enough to upset me, I was still in a fairly good mood. That changed after about five minutes inside the club, when I spotted my current love interest draped with a semi-attractive brunette. I'll call him "Doc".
Doc is the guy I was dating just before I left for NYC. I have actually known him (and his sister) for years, but he had always been in a relationship. Realistically, we were never boyfriend/girlfriend and we had only had a brief (yet magnificent) couple of weeks together. We hiked, watched the sunset, snuggled by campfire, had lovely lunch/coffee/dinner dates, etc. He even told me all about his life, family, past relationships, childhood, etc. He went out of his way to spend time with me. He also suggested that I stay with him if I returned, and asked me to join him on a hut trip this winter. We had kept in touch after my move and I thought that he would be happy to see me again. As usual, I was wrong. Seriously? I'd only been gone for less than a month! Apparently, a lot can change in a little time.
Anyway, guys are full of shit. It took me a few years decades to figure that out. But they're so sweet--when they know that you're leaving town! I hate Aspen for being such a small town where I constantly run into old flames, or discover that I am an old flame. Honestly though, I didn't really have any expectations with Doc. As a matter of fact, I kinda suspected that he was full of shit even before I moved to NYC. Especially when he stared at me, pretending to gaze longingly into my eyes. I sensed insincerity; rather than a connection, I felt uncomfortable. So my ego hurt, not my heart.
When I finally made it to my friend's shack where I was invited to crash, I began writing this blog. Not long after, he arrived with a few guests. Two of them disappeared into the guest room where I was to sleep. After hearing intense baby-making sounds, I considered sleeping in my car, but opted for the couch instead. (Note to self: For the next visit to Aspen, rent an apartment or get a hotel.)
