Last night, I couldn't sleep and was awake until after 4am. Nonetheless, I woke up this morning around 9am, slammed a double espresso, cranked out a grad school application, sold some furniture, went to a dance class, helped with a film casting, and squeezed in a late dinner with POF #8. Although I had planned on going home to freshen up before my date, I was already three hours behind schedule and too exhausted to make a fuss. Plus, we both happened to be in the same part of town. Despite the fact that I didn't have time to shower after dance class and was wearing a grungy old shirt that was clamped together with a hair clip because it was missing two buttons, I decided to forgo the grooming and go as I was. After all, it was just a POF date.

Since we'd only exchanged a few brief messages prior to the meeting, I didn't know what to expect. The only thing I knew about this guy is that he was German. Surprisingly, he made a nice first impression. Actually, I think he may have been the best-looking POF date thus far! He was no Brad Pitt but was well-groomed, well-dressed, and well-spoken. And, I am such a sucker for the classy, sophisticated European style. He also had a lovely smile, good teeth, and nice eyes.

Taking advantage of the mild, autumn weather, we sat at a sidewalk table outside of a trendy Asian-fusion cafe near Union Square, and shared a small bottle of sake. Famished, I felt woozy after only a couple of sips. When my spicy coconut curry chicken arrived, I wasn't shy about chowing down. I stopped halfway through when I sensed that The German thought that I was a rude, glutenous American. I pretended to be stuffed and pushed the bowl away, redirecting my attention to the sake. I was confused because for the first time since I began this experiment, I couldn't tell if my date was into me or not.

I thought everything was fine until The German surprised me by cutting the date short, claiming to be exhausted after drinking too many Bloody Marys at brunch and entertaining visitors all day. Although he insisted on paying and suggested that we meet up again when he has more energy, I was a little suspicious that he was just trying to blow me off. To be honest, I don't know if I would have wanted to date me either; I had verbal diarrhea and rambled on about my stressful day while slurping noodles in a hair clip-fastened shirt--NOT my best moment! Maybe The German was just really tired. Time will tell, but I won't be waiting by the phone.
