The POF Experiment #1: Nerd
I finally did it! After many e-mails and IMs, I met up with one of the several contacts I made on Plenty of Fish (POF). He didn't look super hot on his profile, but attractive enough and seemed like a nice guy. He had a nice smile in his pics and seemed intelligent. He's an attorney who moved to NYC for law school about five years ago, and now has his own firm on Wall Street. He's one of five brothers- who are all doctors, lawyers, or psychologists. And he's Jewish! My mom would LOVE him! I, however, did not.
Originally we were going to grab some ice cream. But, I changed my mind after eating the most delicious mint chocolate chip ice cream cone in Coney Island the day before. Since my ice cream craving was already satiated, I suggested wine instead. He met me in my hood, Battery Park. He wore a short-sleeved gray polo shirt tucked into his blue, pleated pants and running shoes. His hair was disheveled and strange. But his smile was nice and wardrobe and hair can always be changed.
We walked around and settled for the first place that we saw was open. I had a glass of wine and some delicious shrimp dumplings! He ordered cranberry juice and a veggie burger. (He's a vegetarian-- which is cool. I used to be one too. But I felt like I was on a date with an 8 year-old.) Anyway, conversation was okay. We decided to take a stroll on the promenade along the Hudson River and chatted some more. It was nice, but definitely no sparks. We stopped by another bar, where he ordered apple juice. I asked the bartender to put it in a sippy cup. I followed his lead and ordered a virgin club soda. After only a few sips, we learned that there was a movie theater nearby. So, off we went. He wanted to see 'Predators' but I suggested a different movie-- any other movie. I didn't really have a desire to see that movie but he's a huge sci-fi nerd and insisted. Just as I had suspected, the movie was stupid. The worse part of the movie was his behavior.
After walking all evening in my high heels, I kicked them off to relieve my aching feet. He followed, removing his sneakers and putting his feet up on the chair in front of him, near the head of an unfortunate movie-goer. FYI guys: the only time you should remove your shoes on a date is if you have been walking for hours in high heels, or are going to yoga. Even worse, he grabbed my hand. To avoid hurting his feelings, I briefly allowed it-- even though I felt as if I were holding hands with a girl: awkward and unnatural. And the worst of the worse: he tried to kiss me... twice! He was so rejected. He had moves worse than my junior high boyfriend. How cheesy: Trying to make out with me in a movie theater!
During the walk home, I made sure that I was holding my clutch in the hand closest to him, to avoid holding hands. I think he caught on. When we reached my final destination, we hugged good-bye and that's all folks! POF experiment subject #1: FAIL!
